THE NUBRA TREK
Difficulty – Medium Grade
The trek route crosses the high Digar La pass over the Ladakh Range; it was the alternative route for the Yarkand Traders when KhardungLa was blocked by snow. The trek takes 5 days to reach Nubra Valley.
Jun 13th (Thu) – (DAY 1 – of Trek) Leh – Sabu – Digar La Base (5 to 6 hours). The Large village of Sabu (also spelled Saboo) is 8 km to the east of Leh and can be reached by Cab and Local Bus Transport. There is a prominent gompa in the village, dating back to 18th century.
The trail begins at Sabu Phu, an outlying hamlet, where the road ends. Crossing over to the left bank of the Sabu river, it begins a long ascent that leads to the little settlement of Pulu Digar, where there is a camping ground. But you, could continue climbing for another two hours to reach the DigarLa Base; the campsite here is better located for next day’s ascent of the DigarLa Pass.
Jun 14th (Thu) – (Day 2 – of Trek) DigarLa Base – Chumik Yogma (7 to 8 hours). Following the Sabu stream, the trail ascends steeply as it heads towards the pass. It passes by a moraine near the source of the stream, then zigzags up a precipitous slope to the top of the pass (5400 meters/ 17,720 feet). The views of the Karakoram (Saser Muztagh) Range are splendid as too are those of the Stok Range to the South. The descend is steep at first, reaching a few abandoned stone huts at the source of a stream. Follow the stream down to a plateau, and then abandoned stone huts at the source of a stream. Follow the stream down to a plateau, and then past a moraine and a stony stretch until you reach the pastures of Chumik Yogmas where you can camp.
Jun 15th (Sat) – (Day 3 of Trek) Chumik Yogma – Digar (3 hours). This is a short stretch; the path is ill-defined but heads in a north-easterly direction. The village of Digar is reached in about three hours; it is an interesting isolated settlement with a gompa. The campsite is just above the village.
Jun 16th (Sun) – (Day 4 of Trek) Digar – Rong (7 to 8 hours). Very long walk through extremely barren country. The trail heads in a north-westerly direction; just beyond a mani wall (with excellent views of the Shyok Valley below), it begins a descent, dropping to a tableland that extends for about 3 km, then a short climb to a sand dune. It is a desert here with the path dropping the steeply down the sandy slope. You reach a flat strip of land beside a stream to a rocky spur which it rounds and climbs a bit, then heads west high over the Shyok river. The village of Rongdu can be seen on the opposite bank. You pass by a stream (where it is possible to camp), then traverse a sheer rock-face along a narrow track that barely clings to the cliff. Finally the trail begins descending to the valley floor and you reach the village of Rong with a nice campsite.
Jun 17th Mon (Day 5 of trek) – Rong to Diskit. A Very steep zigzagging climb from Rong will bring you to the Leh-Nubra road, just 11km away from Khalsar. You can climb flag down a bus heading into Nubra here; they usually pass by the place after 9 am. Alternetely, you can head back to Leh (85km) by boarding a bus or other vehicle heading the opposite way.
