Start cycling through fishermans’ small locality near madh to reach madh fort and madh island. Explore the virgin land with pin drop silence and unexplored land route. The fort is secluded and difficult to reach – it is the last stop on route 271 of BEST bus service. It was built by Portuguese as watch tower in 17thcentury. Some famous bollywood movies like ‘Love Ke Liye Kucch bhi Karega’ and Manmohan Desai’s 1985 Movie ‘Mard’ have been shot at this location. Many episodes of the popular serial C.I.D are also shot here…!!

Reach Marve Jetty and take your cycles again on ferry boat to the other side of Manori and Gorai, the east Indian villages part of former Portuguese colony of Bassein. Check out the crumbling holy magi church in Gorai and be back  by 3 pm at Versova.

Preparations and things to carry:

Minimal weight of your rucksack is recommended as load starts feeling later once you cycle further. Water bottle, sunscreen Cream, extra money, headgear/cap and sunglasses are must recommend. Avoid wearing dark color clothes and slippers/sandles/heels. Jogging shoes are best for cycling. Waist pouches too can come very handy for things that require frequent usage during the day. You can carry packed lunch on morning till evening cycling days.

Be a Proud Eco Adventurist!

Bicycles provide numerous benefits compared to motor vehicles, including exercise, an alternative to the use of fossil fuels, no airor noise pollution, much reduced traffic congestion, easier parking, greater maneuverability, and access to both roads and paths. The advantages are at less financial cost to the user as well as society (negligible damage to roads, and less pavement required).

Kalsubai

Kalsubai Peak (Marathi: कळसूबाई शिखर) is the highest peak (1646 meters / 5400 feet) of the Sahyadris in Akole Taluka, of Ahmednagar district of Maharashtra, an Indian state.

'Kalsubai' temple is located at the topmost peak Kalsubai, a local deity.  A traditional prayer (pooja) service is held every Tuesday and Thursday by a local priest. On Navratri occasions many stalls are set up atop the summit for the pooja materials. During the Navratri period, for all nine days, special poojas are carried out and idol is fully decorated.

To reach the summit there are various trekking routes and animal tracks. The main route starts from the village of Bari which is about six km from Bhandardara. To reach Bari, one has to travel to Igatpuri on the Mumbai Nasik route. From Igatpuri take the early morning bus (at around 5.00 am from the Igatpuri Bus Stand) going towards Pune and alight at Bari. Those who want to reach from Mumbai, easily travel through local train in morning hours and get down at Kasara station. From Kasara one can get buses and share taxis to get down at Bari.

The main route to the temple is at small climbing slope. It usually takes three  to four hours to reach the top from Bari. Soon after leaving Bari, a small stream is crossed followed soon after by a Hanuman temple. The route from behind this temple takes the hiker straight to the summit. There are three iron ladders along this route. There is a well near the last iron ladder as one approaches the top but the water is not potable during the summer. The rest of the route is without water, so it is best to fill water bottles in Bari. It is an easy hike, but parts of it are quite steep in places.

The vastly spread out backwaters of Bhandardara attracts ones attention from the top. To the north of the mountain range forts such as Ramsej, Harihargad, Brahmagiri, Anjaneri, Ghargad, Bahula, Tringalwadi, Kavnai can be seen. To the east one can spot Aundha, Vishramgad, Bitangad, to the west Alang, Madangad, Kulang, Ratangad (south west) and to the south Pabhargad, Ghanchakkar, Harishchandragad can be seen.

The green thumb of Karnala, “Fort and Bird Sanctuary”

Four birds with one stone; “Bird Sanctuary, Trek, Fort and an adventure”. The place is a stone throw away from Panvel; provided you can throw the stone a clear distance of 13 kilometers.

Karnala Pinnacle is visible from long distances all around 360 degrees so it is obvious that one can do the same from the top. Maybe that’s the reason somebody thought in the first place to build a fort here.

As-soon-as you cross the small town of Panvel on Mumbai Pune Highway and turn right on Mumbai-Goa Highway you sees a thumb like projection; this Pinnacle is the green thumb of Karnala Bird Sanctuary.  Karnala is located about 55 kilometers from Mumbai and 13 Kilometers from Panvel. This hill fort is often confused with the navel fort of Arnala near Virar.

The decision to declaration of Karnala under wild life sanctuary regulations has helped it grow into a refreshing green Oasis. The weather changes as-soon-as you reach Karnala; the ozone is clear and fresh; and the birds welcome you with their songs. Birds like Drongo, Crow Pheasant, koels, robins, Shashi Pheasants, robins, Scarlet Mine vets, White Back Vultures, The Great Indian Horned Owl, Grey horn bills are among few of the birds spotted here.

This small sanctuary is also home to monkeys, hares, foxes, mongoose; monitor lizards and rare boars have made their home here along with few other small animals. Trees as Neem, Karvanda, Jamoon, mango, fig and crocodile bark trees forms the bulk of various shades of green seen here.

Since the path to Karnala Fort goes through the bird sanctuary, you do not become aware of the height of the hill. The fort is nearly 1500 feet above mean sea level and takes about 60 minutes of brisk climb to reach the top unless you wish to do bird watching and take a casual 2 to 3 hour easy stroll upto the top (easier said than done).

You can see the entrance of Karnala Fort as-soon-as you reach a small plateau. To reach the top you cross a broken gate, a little last mile adventure and you reach the fort. Inside the fort there are few things to explore around the pinnacle few water tanks, granary and ruins of some buildings. The central peak (the pinnacle) is best left for trained climbers and in monsoon not recommended to climbers also. The pinnacle is more dangerous because it also has beehives on it; so kindly avoid smoking near the beehives or throw stone at it playing monkey.

From the top of Karnala, you can see a vast area below. To the northeast, you will find Haji Malang, and just below before that, Prabalgad and Matheran. To the east, in the distance, is a hazy view of Bhimashankar. To the south are Rajmachi and the Duke’s Nose, to the Southwest is the Mahal Mira hill range while to the west is the metropolis of Mumbai.

Near the foothills is another place worth visiting, Yusuf Meher Ali Centre a cottage industry started by freedom fighter by the same name. The centre has 8 to 9 types of cottage industry right from carpentry; pottery; wormy culture; soap industry; oil extraction; bakery; agriculture etc. The place has helped several people from nearby villages to get employment and self-reliance.

More information about the trek / fort
Siddhagad is situated in between two know trekking destination Bhimashankar and Gorakhgad, Sidhhagad is known for its wonderful forest and a bit of thrilling patch towards the end. And if you are travelling in monsoon few river crossings and half a dozen waterfalls. So get ready for a all-round monsoon adventure and thrill
Kalyan is the nearest convenient railway station. S.T. buses from Kalyan to Murbad (about 30 Km.) are available every after 1/2 hour. From Murbad, catch S.T. bus to base village Narivali (about 15 Km.). 212 hours walk through dense forest will take you to Siddhagad Wadi (Village) and a temple. Further walk of 1 hour is through barren land. Be careful towards the end.
There isn't much to see on the fort except few remnants. However, the trek as such is very much enjoyable, especially in the months of October and November, when few waterfalls are still alive. Some 1/2 hr before the top, there is a nice cave made into a home place of "Sadhu Baba". View of the Gorakhgad and adjacent hills from the entrance of this cave is just wonderful (see the snap). Nice small courtyard in front of a cave could be a great place to sit and have a lunch.

More about Borwadi

Borwadi - 30 mins from Borwadi village is Kotwal Smarak, which is dedicated to two freedom fighters Bhai Kotwal & Hiraji Patil who were shot dead at this place by a Britisher on 2nd Jan 1943.

Siddhgad – Nothing much has been mentioned about Shivaji Maharaj and Siddhgad. But this fort was in Swarajya till year 1690. The cave on the fort looks 1000 years old. It was taken by the British in 1818. Siddhgad was at a difficult location and cannons fired by Britishers could not reach Siddhgad hence cannons were brought up till Damdamia plateau slightly higher than Siddhgad via Pune – Bhimashankar route. Cannon shells were then fired to destroy Siddhgad in year 1819. The villagers mention that these cannons are still there in dense forests of Damdamia.
