“Tigers, except when wounded or when man-eaters, are on the whole very good-tempered...Occassionally a tiger will object to too close an approach to its cubs or to a kill that it is guarding. The objection invariably takes the form of growling, and if this does not prove effective itis followed by short rushes accompanied by terrifying roars. If these warnings are disregarded, the blame for any injury inflicted rests entirely with the intruder"- Jim Corbett”

One Day Trek to Gambhirgad

Event - One Day Trek to Gambhirgad (The Mystery Fort)

Event Date - December 2, 2012

There is a local legend, you can only reach summit of Gambhirgad if Gambhir Baba has called you.. The first time we tried the event was marked with loads of adventures, that included flat tyres, bus getting stuck in pit, and we almost scaled the summit but not quite there..

Second time we did scale the summit but not before we had our set of challenges and adventures.. we climbed from a very difficult side of the mountain, it had a very steep gradient, almost 70 degree, with loose, slippery scree and falling boulder to add to the challenge. But determined we finally made it to the summit, perhaps Gambhir Baba was impressed by our persist ency and determination..

A trekker's delight, Dukes Nose or Nagphani is a 800-foot monolith located in Khandala. Locally known as Nagphani  ( hood of the snake, as the cliff also resembles the hood of the snake), the British named it Duke's Nose after Duke of Wellington (his pointed nose resembled this cliff). One can reach the top of Dukes Nose in one and a half hours. There is a Mahadeva temple and large space on top of the rock.  This  is accessible from INS Shivaji and Kurwande Village.

A Little Bit of  Visapur Fort History..
Our first major destination for the day Visapur stands tall at a height of 3567 feet; this fort is located next to another fascinating fort Lohagad. These two forts are separated by a small khind called Gaimukh. These forts were built during the period of Satavahana reign. After being under the control of Nizamshah and Adilshah, the forts were then conquered by Shivaji, Later in a treaty signed by Shivaji with Mirza Raje Jaisingh, he handed over twenty three forts to Aurangzeb. Subsequently he recaptured these forts; after his death the forts came under the rule of Mughals before Kanoji Angre won it back. During the time of the Peshwas these forts were used quite a lot. The last rulers of the fort were British.

Visapur Fort Trek Routes

Visapur can be approached by two routes; one route is to climb the trail leading to Khind between Lohgad and Visapur; follow the trail to your left leading towards Bhedse hill; along this route you will find a path which steeply climbs through a arête ending up into the fort, this is not regular entrance; we will use another route which starts from the stairs leading to Bhaja Caves; after climbing few steps you then take diversion to your left where a small trail climbs above the Bhaja Caves hill to takes you to a  small plateau. From this plateau you can see the fort very clearly. You maintain your progress keep to the left hand side of the hill as you climb up along the walls till you come across a small waterfall (will be dry when we trek from here in November) and then from here a small trail leads you the start of stairs leading to the entrance of fort which has a Maruti Temple just few steps short of the entrance.
